USA Storm Chasing Expedition - 02 May, 2009

Heading towards Dallas.

Decent storm cells firing up.

Small wall cloud forming.

Entering Fort Worth.

Quite low cloud base.

Looks a little scary.

Traffic is building.

Aha..  Dallas.

Police speeding by for some reason. I wonder what for?

A nice skyline shot of Dallas.

A little more zoomed in.

Dealey Plaza... Driving though the Kennedy Assassination site.

Now heading to a major incident where the Dallas Cowboys sports team practice stadium collapsed.

Lots of microwave trucks.

Fire trucks and EMS on scene.

The practice stadium collapsed during the storm.

Media coverage for this event was huge.

In case you don't realise, these trucks tend to be Lightning magnets.

A witness being interviewed by local media.

The collapsed stadium.

Lots of cameras setup in mud.

Do they all realise, another storm is on its way?

Mains power, video and audio feeds are all over the place.

It really was a media circus.

After informing all the crews about the incoming storms, I was amazed no one knew what was heading their way.
I urgently setup my live field radar for all to monitor
Everyone (especially the engineers) panicked when they realised they were sitting ducks, surrounded by 8 or so lightning rods.

Everyone rushing to terminate the live 6:00pm news feed.

The storm front was about 12 minutes away.
(It was 5.51pm at this time, and all the reporters and tech crews would have faced the full wrath of the 2nd storm)

Everyone decided to quickly do a pre-recorded PTC (Piece to camera) stating it was way too dangerous to do it for the live 6.00pm news story.

One reporter quickly runs off his story, (first and only take), he then quickly throws the microphone back at the camera operator,
(not wanting to be the ground plane for the lightning strike).... In other words..  (A human electricity conductor)

Almost done.

Field engineers slam the emergency DOWN button the moment the footage is fed.

I'm not waiting around for the storm front, everyone evacuates to shelter.

Most trucks are now safe.. One still has its lightning rod fully extended.

I'm outta there..  At 6.07pm a major lightning bolt struck nearby.. Not sure what it hit, but I know it was NOT one of the News Trucks.

I'm heading north, trying to escape the storm core. (This is what they would have been working in)

Hiding under a bridge.  Quarter sized hail.

Still very strong rain.

Nearly out of the storm.

Nearly there.

Done.

Clear run to Norman, Oklahoma.

Welcome back to Oklahoma.

RADAR IMAGES

The storm that hit Dallas.

A close up.

Live webcam.

Looking for the stadium.

After a little searching, I got the address.

The storm heading for the media.

It's not far away.

Weakening, but later increased again in strength.

The whole of Dallas was under a current tornado watch, and warning.

This image taken as I was driving up the highway.

The darkish red is where the media are. (Storm Core). 6:13pm

Escaped north.. I'm in the clear.
What a day.
