USA Storm Chasing Expedition - 22 May, 2008

MAJOR TORNADO OUTBREAK

The start of the supercell.

Supercell growing in strength, but the road network is terrible, very dangerous dirt roads.

Quick pit stop to refuel. Notice the flag almost flat?

Radar data, a swarm of deadly supercells heading our way.

Rotation in the clouds, this tornado touched down briefly.

Watching the entire supercell with Tornado.

Rotation coming in closer.

Rotation pulling away.

Storm chasers lined up ready for the show.

We are in the middle of a cornfield and we have traffic!

More rotation.....  almost there.

Heading into the back edge of the cell.

Hmmm... This road looks deadly.. We decide not to go down it.

Opps..  wrong turn.

Oh no.

Bogged.

We can't get out.

Our skid marks...  OK..  everyone out!!!

Stuart and Richard helping push...  (Stuart getting a little dirty in the process)

Right behind the rotation.

Mike a little muddy.

Watching for tornadoes..

aha....  errr...  perhaps not.

Eric (Great Photographer) waiting for the perfect shot.

Nearly there.

Bingo... LOOK VERY CAREFULLY!.

Tornado On The GROUND!!!!

Beautiful.

What a feeling... Finally got a nice one.

Slender, but deadly.

Ripping through farm land... No Damage thankfully.

Everyone taking shots like mad.

Composing the perfect shot.... hmmmm.. NO..

Yeah... That's better.

Tornado roping out.

Almost dead.

Dead.

Spotter Network going mad with Live Reports.

ALL STORMS NOW DECLARED TORNADO WARNED (Red Boxes).. UNBELIEVABLE.

Another Tornado, just south of Interstate 70.

Oh No..  Watch out for the Fuel Tankers...  They don't mix with Tornadoes.

Very dangerous situation.

The cone is silent.

Not for long..

There it is again.

Oh my..

Errr...

Anyone??

Are we dead yet?

Nope... not yet.

Richard with the blank look of shock on his face.

Tornado is well and truly on the ground, we are about 80 metres away.

Long story short...  We came very close... We were subjected to winds in excess of 150-160km/h
Equivalent to an EF0 / EF1 Tornado at the van locations.
Our drivers could not close their doors, both vans had their door hinges damaged with the extreme winds.
3 People had to help the driver get back into the car.
The GPS, maps, tapes and other items were sucked off the dashboard into the storm.

It was quite fun, but really quite scary...

The skies blackened with fear.

A rotating cloud above our head.

Oh no... Not the farmhouse.

Just missed. But this was NOT a tornado thankfully, just a rotating Scud (A lookalike Tornado)

Chaos...  Absolute Chaos.
